What is Synthetic Oil?
There are at least three different types of oils you can usually find on the shelf in your town.
- One is called mineral based and this is produced from and is what we normally think of when we talk about oils. They may be a good product for your Accord.
- The second type is a synthetic product. This synthetic oil is also made from mineral oils but they are engineered in a very different way. There are two different types of synthetic oils found in the United States. One synthetic oil is called Group III and another synthetic oil is called Group IV. Both are engineered, but Group IV synthetic is more highly developed and in the rest of the world is considered the only true synthetic oil.
- Group III oils are sometimes referred to as semi-synthetic. Group IV is the most expensive because of all of the engineering steps it must go through, but it is the best synthetic oil available for your car.
Synthetic oil is also considered as being an oil with chemical compounds which were not originally present in the crude oil. Typically synthetic oils provide superior chemical and mechanical properties compared to mineral oils.
Some of the advantages of synthetic oil are:
- More resistant to oxidation and oil sludge problem
- May improve fuel economy
- Additives in the synthetic oil do not break down as fast
- May be able to go longer between oil changes with less environmental impact (this is a controversial topic)
- Better high and low temperatures viscosity performance
As with any set of advantages there are also some disadvantages with this synthetic oil product:
Costs are very high. Group IV oils may be four times as expensive as other synthetic oil products. They have a lower level of friction, and unless a particular automobile manufacturer specifies a synthetic oil as a break in oil, it should not be used during the break in period of a new car.
Older engines may not be suited for older engines. Some older pushrod engines had experienced problems with parts not working correctly.
