What is a backup Sensor?

You may have heard about a backup sensor or parking sensors but have never seen one. They are becoming more popular and are available on even economy cars such as the new Toyota Prius. They may be on an Accord in the near future. It would be a valuable safety feature.

  •   A backup sensor is a safety feature that gives you information about what is behind your vehicle. Have you ever backed up your car and either hit something you did not see or run over an object that you were not aware was behind you? If so, then you can appreciate how helpful it would be to have a backup sensor and to know in advance that there was an obstruction before you encountered it.

  •   Basically then a backup sensor or parking sensor is a device that tells you or shows you information about objects in the back of your car through various means.

  • Some simple backup sensor systems just alert you with a buzz or other sounds that something is there, and you had better stop before you run into it.

More sophisticated backup sensor systems have a small display screen which shows you a live picture of the rear area of your car while you are backing up. Some backup sensor systems in new cars have a large display screen that is multipurpose in nature. For example if you are driving forwards you may be able to display GPS information, information about mpg and battery usage, temperature, or other information about your car. As soon as you engage a reverse drive these screens can automatically switch to a display of the rear area of your car and it becomes a backup sensor display. Some also have a audible warning system in addition to the tv picture backup sensor.

There are also a wide variety of aftermarket backup sensor kits that you can install yourself. Some backup sensor kits have one sensor that you attach to the license plate frame and other backup sensor kits have four sensors that are attached by drilling holes in your bumper. Prices on backup sensor kits may range from less than $40.00 to several hundred for the more advanced systems.
