Why You Might Want an Accord NOS System
You have heard about Nitrous Oxide systems and seen movies or street cars use them for an instant power boost. Is this something you can add to your Accord and what are the ups and downs of adding this type of system to your car?
- The power increase is real. A typical application will give you from 50 to 100% increase peak with even more at lower RPMs. Compared to other ways of increasing your power such as tuning, adding a turbocharger or adding a supercharger, a NOS system's cost would be about average. One advantage of NOS would be that you can move it to another car.
- Other advantages of NOS are that it does not wear out. NOS is also not vehicle specific like many other systems that you can add to increase power. It can even be added to a turbo system and eliminate most or all of the dreaded "turbo lag". When you need more instant power from your turbo system NOS may be the answer.
- Sound good, but there are some down sides also for NOS. First the average NOS system contains one bottle of Nitrous Oxide, in a liquid form. This entire bottle can be used up in as little as twenty seconds when you throw the NOS switch. So you get amazing power, but only for a very short time with NOS. While you can increase the power by 50% or more, some knowledgeable people have suggested keeping the NOS boost to 25-35%. More than that with NOS can compromise engine durability too much. With a specially modified engine you can increase this NOS level. These modifications should include forged pistons, better connecting rods, better bearings and various other modification to take the sudden increase in power.
- It is very important that your NOS system delivers the nitrous oxide and the required additional fuel at the correct proportions. If you do not get the extra fuel into your engine you will be running with a lean air/nitrous to fuel mixture. This will cause a detonation problem. Make sure you understand how to install NOS correctly.
